Ex-3 INCHES OF BLOOD Members Resurface In PRIDE TIGER

February 2, 2007

Former 3 INCHES OF BLOOD drummer Matt Wood recently spoke to Ottawa Sun reporter Allen Wigney about his new band, PRIDE TIGER, which he started along with guitarists Bob Froese and Sunny Dhak and bassist Mike Payette. In the interview, he exlains how PRIDE TIGER was formed strictly out of a passion for various '70s guitar-driven bands like THIN LIZZY, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, ZZ TOP and LYNYRD SKYNYRD, which he felt he wasn't getting out of playing with 3 INCHES OF BLOOD.

"It was just good friends getting together over a love of the same music," Wood said. That music: "Guitar rock; '70s rock." Suddenly, the twin-lead guitar attack was less MAIDEN and more BLUE ÖYSTER CULT.

"After awhile," Wood said of the hard-rock reformation, "metal just becomes the same thing over and over. Anyway, I'm not really a metal dude. None of us are. I'm sure if you studied pictures of 3 INCHES OF BLOOD you could pick us out as not really belonging there."

So, like, they belong in the '70s? Not exactly, Wood insisted.

"We don't want to get lumped into too much of that '70s-rock thing," he said. "We try to be more modern, you know, we're not THIN LIZZY and this isn't the '70s. It's just guitar rock.

"If you slowed it down, we'd probably sound like, oh, I don't know ... THE TRAGICALLY HIP or something."

Wood chuckled at the notion. But there's no denying his or the band's devotion to the rock.

"The state of rock on the radio right now isn't good for me," he says of his motivation. "It isn't good for most people. It has to change."

PRIDE TIGER plays Zaphod Beeblebrox in downtown Ottawa tomorrow (Feb. 3). Support will come from THE DOUBLE PUMPERS and THE MIGHTY EAGLE BAND. Tickets are $8 at the door.
